Swedish Consulate – ByteDance has made a significant stride into the AI video sector by launching a new application that can generate videos from text prompts. This move places the company among a rising number of Chinese technology firms exploring this nascent market, which is also being pursued by OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
In February, OpenAI introduced its text-to-video model, Sora, which, despite its promising capabilities, remains unavailable for public use. Since then, there has been a flurry of activity among Chinese tech companies, each striving to develop and deploy similar technologies. ByteDance’s latest innovation, Jimeng AI, is a prime example of this trend.
Jimeng AI, developed by ByteDance’s subsidiary Faceu Technology, has recently launched on the Apple App Store specifically for Chinese users. This follows its initial release on Android on July 31. The app’s launch is noteworthy within the context of a series of recent releases by other Chinese firms, signaling an accelerating pace in the development of text-to-video models.

Kuaishou’s Kling AI Expands Global Reach
In parallel, Kuaishou, a prominent player in China’s video app market, unveiled its Kling AI text-to-video model to a global audience at the end of last month. The beta version of Kling AI is now accessible worldwide, requiring only an email address for registration, thus broadening its reach and user base.
Moreover, Zhipu AI, another Chinese startup, debuted its video-generating model, Ying, last month. Following this, Shengshu, another emerging player, also introduced its Vidu app, further intensifying the competitive landscape.
Jimeng AI, which operates under ByteDance Jianying division well-known for its popular video editing app CapCut—offers several subscription plans. Users can choose from a monthly subscription priced at 69 yuan ($9.65), a single month option for 79 yuan, or an annual plan at 659 yuan. Each subscription tier allows for the creation of approximately 2,050 images or 168 AI-generated videos per month, providing a robust set of features aimed at both casual users and professionals. This launch underscores ByteDance’s commitment to expanding its technological footprint and competing in the rapidly evolving field of AI-driven video content creation.
